MISC. HISTORY
MISC. MUSIC The Dysfunctional Music Corporation, started as a joke when Blake Sandberg
(owner/operator) passed a giant MUZAK building in up-state New York. The MUZAK slogan on the
building read, “THE FUNCTIONAL MUSIC CORP.” He decided if MUZAK was “FUNCTIONAL” his MISC.
MUSIC company was “DYSFUNCTIONAL.” The phrase stuck and Blake began releasing home made
CDRs of experimental music in New York city under that name. Selling recordings at shows and
handing them out on the subway while asking “HOW LO FI CAN YOU GO?”
Later, returning to his native Austin Blake expanded MISC. MUSIC and has started releasing
manufactured CDs and vinyl records.
The label is dedicated to releasing underground music in all forms. Under rated and completely
unknown artists and bands that are making new sounds for today. These artists need to be heard and
given a chance to record and release their music to an audience and grow sonically.
MISC. is an independent label in the spirit of SHIMMY DISC, DISCHORD, ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES,
SKIN GRAFT, K, and TOUCH AND GO. MISC. MUSIC is an entity for challenging music and new forms of
sound for a new century. Combining a passion for rock and roll and inventive sound experimentation.
Being located in Austin at this time is exciting as the city and the music scene is rapidly changing.
MISC. hopes to provide something different into the local music climate. There are so many musicians
here many go unnoticed or not properly represented. We hope to give unique artists the opportunity
to release their individual sounds and make a community for artists who are exploring new musical
ideas.
Who is on the MISC. MUSIC SAMPLER?
Many of these artists we release for the first time like, DAMAGE PANTS, PULSE AND THEORY, LAZAR
WOLF, CHANNEL CATFISH AUDIO, HOOKAH THIEF, and WASP AND PEAR. Many of these artists have
been releasing their own music and are now collaborating with MISC. to form a community of
musicians: SADO MASSACHUSETTS, THE ETERNAL SQUID, MASTERTAPE, GIL SAN MARCOS, VORP, AND
ILLINOIS PAYSON.
DANNY AND THE NIGHTMARES are Daniel Johnston and Jason and Bridget “NIGHTMARE” The three
have come together to blend Daniel’s imaginative song writing with a garage band attitude and a
pulsing sound in the vein of the Velvet Underground. “RED HOT SEX” is a new improvised gem of a
song. MISC. is pleased to bring you new releases by Austin legend DANIEL JOHNSTON and THE
NIGHTMARES.
MISC. is fortunate to release a new track by the Hip – Hop pioneer, THE RAMMELLZEE, his track,
“LECTURE” will also appear on a full length album we will release in the fall. This is the first new
RAMMELLZEE release since his double album “THE BI-CONICALS”
MODERN PRIMITIVES combine the talents of Mark Younger-Smith (Gutarist for BILLY IDOL), Tal
Bergman (Drummer for BILLY IDOL and LL COOL J). and Carmine Rojas(former Bassist for DAVID BOWIE
and CHAKA KAHN) combine their talents to create dance inspired guitar and sampler soundscapes
represented here by “ELECTRONICS”
DJ HIGH PRIEST is a New York based modernistic Bossa Nova inspired DJ, blending hip hop and Bossa
Nova sounds seamlessly. He has worked with KOOL HERC, AFRIKA BAMBAATAA, and THE
RAMMELLZEE.
ALIENS are Blake (Guitars/Vocals) with the legendary drummer, who provided the immortal beat for
“Lust For Life” HUNT SALES (IGGY POP and TIN MACHINE) here HUNT adds his rhythmic skills to “ENJOY
KILLING TIME”
MISC. MUSIC has created a new label for modern music in Austin and the world over. With the internet
and downloadable music even a small independent label could reach many listeners internationally.
MISC. has already begun to branch out across the Earth, releasing SUPERPUSSY’S first song in
America, “IN MY HEAD”. The Australian group is a rock and roll powerhouse with a fierce live show
and strong song craftsmanship. We hope to see them tour the US soon.
